2010 Movie List: Jan 01-04: Life as a House, And Soon the Darkness, Moon & Trilogia: To Livadi Pou Dakryzei

Rules & Guidelines:
1. Keep track of every film watched throughout the year.
2. First time movies only (for either myself or my partner).
3. Review each.
4. Attempt 12 movies per month minimum.

Last year in March a few friends and I attempted to start a 50 Movie Club in which we’d watch 50 movies and record them all to our journals. Unfortunately due to an EXPLOSION in life events I managed to post two films before that utterly died.

So this year, a reboot. 12 months, 12 movies per month (minimum), for 2010. That’s a lot of ones and twos. And I like it.

To try and not OVERWHELM myself or readers, I’m posting reviews four up. Cause its a tidy little number that fits into 12 nicely. That and I’m already sitting at 13 films… xD

RECOMMENDATIONS ARE WELCOME! Though we already have quite an impressive list, we’re always looking for more and I’m pretty much up for anything, though don’t kill me if I absolutely hate your favourite movie ^_^;;;

Life as a House

Life as a House

(2001)
☆ 3/5 Stapleguns
⇒ Much better and simultaneously much worse than I was expecting. The whole film reeks of “I am trying to get an Oscar, and I bet I will.” But that’s sometimes okay too. Hayden Christiansen’s niche role as ‘whiny confused emo kid’ is played out to the hilt, Kevin Kline pulls your heartstrings as you know he can. The rest of the cast is predictably endearing/mainstream quirky and as such are solid in their roles. One thing that irked me greatly though? WTF STAPLEGUNNING LIGHTS ONTO THE GORGEOUS TIMBER BEAMS?! AUUUUGH!! All that beautiful hardwood, ruined! ;_;

Thirty Day Challenge. Day 03: Your Favourite TV Show

I admit, I’m bad at picking ONE thing alone that I love. And my favourites – especially with tv – change so frequently depending on my mood, where I am in my life and, in this case, how CRAP the writing has gotten… xD

But, in terms of CURRENT TV, I’m going with the three shows I most care/fangirl about. Though, bear in mind I’m not including shows like Top Gear, Grand Designs or ANYTHING River Cottage. Cause otherwise this list would be six. Which I guess it is now. Huh.

ANYWAY, so about those “three” tv shows… *whistles* read more »

BEAUTY! Thy name be granny squares

Granny Square projects by dottieangel

AUGH! There simply is too many things one wants to do in one’s lifetime. And CLEARLY crochet-ing granny squares is one of them. Dottie Angel’s post, ‘Getting it on with Mr Hook’ has me eyeing my suitcases filled with vintage yarn and my grandmother’s battered hook and needle case with DECIDED scheming in my eyes.

I had been wondering if I could attempt crochet-ing again this year (previously I’ve not been so keen on it because of my back, but I’m feeling adventurous) & Bec‘s Mum had asked if I could do a little crochet for her as a finishing-off of a knitting project she’d done and now this little gem comes along to make me squee and reawaken my crochet-design imagination with the endless possibilities.

Itchy fingers, I has them!

Thirty Day Challenge. Day 02: Your favourite film

Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)

Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)

I confess, I am rather behind in this challenge. I feel it is because I started it at around 2am on the 7th and that threw me off. Or at least that’s a pleasant fiction I tell myself instead of admitting that life and my health have been the actual factors at play.

When faced with the daunting task of choosing JUST. ONE. MOVIE. As a favourite, I felt it just COULD NOT be done. I love so many films, and I count many as all time favourites – my flixter favourite count is 60+ and there’s a lot still to be added.

But, after a little while of sitting quietly (yes I AM capable of it, despite all apparent protests to the opposite) I realised no that it wasn’t that hard and I narrowed it down to two. And then realised that of those two, in my heart of hearts I could narrow that down once again to one, shining, beautiful piece of cinema.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s quaint, quirky and visually rich Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain is just too too beautiful to NOT be the most beloved favourite.

Sorry, Stranger Than Fiction. You’re awesome, you have flours, but you clearly needed to feature a much more over-saturated cross-processed look to win this girl over completely. ;)

Blue Dot Real Good Experiment

Blu Dot Real Good Experiment from Real Good Chair on Vimeo.

When we opened our SoHo store in 2008, we were introduced to the resourceful culture of “curb-mining”: the act of finding furniture and art on the street. Now that a year has passed, we decided to conduct a curb-mining experiment of our own to celebrate our one-year anniversary in New York.

On November 4-5, 25 Real Good Chairs were dropped around NYC, free for the take. Many were GPS-enabled. Watch the film to see what happened.

Directed by Andrew Zuchero
Produced by Supermarche
Concept by mono
Technology by Tellart

Ahahaha! I’m off re-posting things my friends have posted again, but this is just TOO glorious to not! Love the editing, the concept, the CHAIR! And man every single one of the INCOs seem to be seriously awesome people.

I’d so love to see just how ‘sit-able’ that chair is…

Symphony of Science

They had me at hello Attenborough! ♥ Mythosidhe posted this video on her livejournal this morning and it filled me with absolute love – and the need to fling myself at the Symphony of Science website to absorb and download everything I could get my wiggling fingers upon.

I’d love to have all of this on projectors all over the walls of a space while a party was going on, a soundtrack of minds & voices lyrically filling your head with learning.

Everything is so beautifully put together and fabulously compelling. AND ITS SCIENCE! ‘Tis true, ‘I find the reality thrilling‘ ♥

I’ve been clearly caught napping: Pride & Prejudice the Comic

Pride & Prejudice the Comic

Released last year on – I kid you not – April first, I had NO IDEA someone had converted Pride & Prejudice to a rather sumptuously illustrated five part comic. And by someone, I mean MARVEL! Mein gott!

Though it appears only issue one’s cover is developed as a flashy women’s magazine, the rest of the editions look delicious. Lords I hope Pulp Fiction have them in stock. Not that I can afford them but that’s clearly beside the point! Its Pride & Prejudice for crying out loud! A girl can’t ever have too many adaptations. Just because I already have a number bordering on a dozen in quantity, definitely does not exclude the possibility of getting my delighted fingers on these.

ILLUSTRATED, PEOPLE! ILLUSTRATED!

For your viewing pleasure: Issue #2, Issue #3, Issue #4, & Issue #5

I’m sure post posting this the delectable mythosidhe will inform me that she posted about this a year ago, or the gorgeous librarian type deasilvae will berate me for forgetting she told me about it forever ago. xD BUT! Better late acknowledging awesome than never? Plus I… Can’t think of a decent excuse. Chewbacca?

ETA: By all accounts, it appears that the interior of the comics don’t match up to the expectation of the covers. This is the hour of my discontent!

Thirty Day Challenge. Day 01: Your favourite song

Before I actually do this whole thing, I want to go on record that: I HAVE A MASSIVE PROBLEM WITH THIS CHALLENGE! Namingly: this challenge includes me having only ONE favourite book/movie/song. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. And thusly I’m going to interpret these as loosely as I like. So there. xD

So for day one, I’m listing my top 25 most played songs on my iTunes list. These songs are all rated five stars (bar one I believe) and though I love with a vengeance many, many MANY other songs – I’ve got to draw the line SOMEWHERE. xD

MATRYOSHKA MEASURING CUPS?! Where have you been my WHOLE life?!

Russian Doll aka Matryoshka Measuring Cups. THEY NEST!!

Russian Doll measuring cups?!?! Fredflare, stop teasing me with your awesome, AWESOME items. KTHX!? GODDAMN I’ve been eyeing off Bec’s newer measuring cups for a while now, thinking I should update mine (which are actually her old ones from when we were all in Uni xD) and then, THEN, I find these.

MEASURING CUPS, THAT HAVE GOOSHY CHEEKS. And… THEY NEST!?

The grabby hands have reached maximum, the fingers are flinging themselves about so fast you can’t hardly see them. THESE CUPS HAVE REDUCED MY HANDS TO SCARY FINGERLESS NUBS! Or at least the appearance of that.

Maaaan, and I just HAD to be baking right this moment, staring at my clearly now inferior cups with the pursed lips of one who really shouldn’t slight that which has been so useful for the span of nearly a decade. But come ON my already-owned cups, why don’t YOU look happy to see me?!

AUGH THE PRETTIES!! Nordstrom Goldtone Bib Necklace

 Nordstrom Goldtone Bib Necklace

FEEL THE PRETTIES INFUSING YOUR PERSON AS YOU LOOK UPON THIS NECKLACE! Whilst scouring the web for near-impossible-to-find box files, I somehow managed to get trapped perusing polyvore‘s bib necklace category and stumbled upon this piece of gorgeousness.

DO WISH I could afford it to wear to Bec’s wedding, but alas with shipping etc it’d end up being $100. WOE!

PS: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE! xD
